About Genevieve Smith Whitford's books . . .
Author and public speaker Genevieve Smith Whitford writes of birth
and death, love and hate, growing up and growing old. Her books
are a celebration of life and a coming to terms with life.
"The most surprising truth I have discovered," writes
Genevieve Whitford, "is that the late years can be the best
time of your life. You feel strong and confident as never before
and you are free at last to be yourself." In her newest book,
Autumn Sun: The Bright Side of Aging, Genevieve explores
the challenges and surprising benefits of aging. Each page offers
an insight into growing older, from welcoming grandchildren to losing
a spouse. Autumn Sun is an invigorating, positive resource
for dealing with life as a senior.
Queen Anne's Lace, Ms. Whitford's first book, was originally
published in 1982 and has a long publishing history, including publication
by Macmillan Publishers. In the foreword, Genevieve says: "My
poems grow from an inner need to deal with ordinary human experience,
to bring it forth, to see it whole, to give it form and meaning."
Indeed, a familiar remark from Genevieve's readers is that she puts
into poetry what everyone feels but few could express.
The Sound of the Harp was published in 1987. This collection
features more honest depictions of common emotions and experiences,
and the included poems are even more thought-provoking and challenging.
Ms. Whitford offers "Erotica," a depiction of sexuality
as a wife; "To a Child Stillborn," a rumination on sacrifice;
and "The Hospital," a cold description of medical care,
among many other verses. Every reflection rings true for the reader.
